Week two of Barbara Brackman’s Grandmother’s Choice block of the week and we already get some Y seams to challenge us!
The block is called Amethyst: Suffragettes. The amethyst (purple), green and white were the colors of the British WSPU suffragette organization. Here is my Amethyst block – cute but not very purple!
I like the fabric I chose for this project – it’s cute with top hats, alphabets and puppy dogs with bones – doesn’t that just make you smile? But I am feeling really sad that there is not one speck of purple in the whole batch and purple seems to be significant and meaningful to the project. And everyone knows I LOVE purple! Since we are only two weeks along in the block of the week, I’m tempted to do two versions, one with the cute fabric I have and one with bright purples, greens and lots of florals! Maybe some Kaffe Fassett fabric? What do you think?
If you really want to see some amazing versions of this block in all different kinds of fabric check out the Grandmother’s Choice Flickr Group. I spent hours drooling over these blocks the other night! I was amazed at how the same block can be interpreted in so many different ways based on the choice of fabrics.
Now I’m off to work on the binding for my Civil War block of the week quilt from Barbara Brackman’s blog last year – it’s going in the Trinity Valley Quilt show in just a few short weeks! Here it is before it was quilted:
