A Woman’s Prerogative and a Grandmother’s Choice

As we all know, it is a woman’s prerogative to change her mind and this grandmother (known as Meemaw and Grandma Cookie to those who matter) has changed her mind on the fabric I will use for the Grandmother’s Choice project. Here’s the new fabric:

Grandmother’s Choice is a blog written by Barbara Brackman which recalls women’s fight for the right to vote with a new quilt block each week highlighting different aspects of the suffrage movement. Along with the blog we have a wonderful Flickr group with lots of feedback, examples and encouragement.

My original fabric chosen was kind of cute but for several reasons I wasn’t thrilled with it. The colors were wrong, the fabric was mostly small prints that didn’t lend themselves to fussy cuts and … then there were the disembodied dog heads whose leashes would no longer stay attached:

Just plain strange, right? I just couldn’t see being happy with the fabric for the whole year the project will take. So my friend Suz and I went shopping yesterday! (Thanks for your help, Suz!!!)

Most of the new fabric is Good Fortune by Kate Spain. I think it’s really pretty! Here are blocks 1 and 2:

Now the colors are symbolic of the suffrage movement (purple, green and white) and I have prints I can use for fussy cuts and there’s not a single disembodied dog! But there are squirrels… here’s a closer look at block 1 – Grandmother’s Choice:

And a closer look at block 2 – Amethyst:

Now these are fabrics I can play with for a whole year!!!

  1. You really had a vision for those fabrics…the blocks are stunning! And I did not notice the squirrel before! How convenient that this project needed purple…good job!

  2. Hello! I realize this is sort of off-topic however I needed to ask.
Does building a well-established blog like yours take a large amount of work?
I am completely new to operating a blog but I do write in my diary on a daily basis.

I’d like to start a blog so I can share my own experience and thoughts online. Please let me know if you have any recommendations or tips for new aspiring bloggers. Thankyou!
