Superman Cape for Mikey

My 2 1/2 year old Grandson Mikey is wild about Superman! So I decided he needed a cape.  I got online and found a great superhero cape pattern at thelongthread.com.  It is a fun and easy project!

I wanted to make the traditional Superman shield on the cape, so I googled superman and looked at the images. I printed out the image that I wanted and then recreated it as best I could freehand on freezer paper.

I made two freezer paper shields.  One with the S to make the red part of the shield and one without for the yellow.

That was when I figured out that I should probably be using fusible web, like Pellon’s Wonder Under instead of freezer paper for the red fabric so I could adhere it to the yellow fabric.  Live and learn! 🙂   So, before I cut out the parts of the red where I wanted the yellow to show through, I added Wonder Under on the back.  Then cut out the S and fused it to the yellow shield.

Using black thread and a tight zigzag, I appliqued the red S to the yellow shield:

I then appliqued the Superman shield to the outside fabric of the cape.  I think it turned out pretty well:

I lined the cape in red:

I’ll give Mikey his new cape when I see him Saturday – we are all going on vacation together next week.  I’ll be sure to post a picture of Mikey in his new Superman cape!

  1. Cute cape – I’m sure your grandson will love it! It’s funny how things come full circle. I just saw this same cape design at EnchantedMakeovers.org. The capes are made for kids in shelters. Have FUN on your vacation!
