Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt Along

The Farmer’s Wife Quilt Along on Flickr is in Week 10.  This is my Week 1!  I will catch up – eventually!  The challenge is to create 2 blocks every week from The Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt book (by Laurie Aaron Hird).  The book contains letters from 1920’s farm wives and 111 quilt blocks inspired by their stories.

During my week 1 I made the first five blocks in the book.  I am starting with block 1 and proceeding numerically.  I may change tactics and pick and choose as I feel like.  The fabric I am using is primarily from the Aunt Grace line but also from my stash. Here are this weeks blocks:

I printed out the templates from the CD included in the book for the first two blocks and used the foundation piecing patterns from the Farmers Wife Sampler Yahoo Group to create blocks 3, 4 and 5.  I like the paper piecing better for two reasons.  First, I am much more accurate and precise with paper piecing and second, I just don’t like tracing templates over and over.

Here are some close-ups of each block:

Attic Windows

Autumn Tints

Basket Weave

Bat Wing

It is very hot here in Texas and I’m sure glad I have AC!  I feel for the farmer’s wives of the 1920’s dealing with hardships we can only imagine! The letters in the book are truly inspirational.

Have a great week and keep cool!

  2. Great progress. I really love seeing how different everyone’s blocks are just by using different fabric. At the rate you are going, you will catch up to the flikr group in no time.
It looks like you have some great plans for your retirement and I look forward to seeing what you get up to.
