Civil War Quilts BOW – Indiana Puzzle – My First Curves!!!

Eeeek!  Curves!!!  Barbara Brackman’s Civil War Quilts Block of the Week for week 33 is called Indiana Puzzle.  I have never sewn a curved seam – not on purpose anyway!

So my first step was to pull out my favorite go-to quilting guide – Better Homes and Gardens Complete Guide to Quilting.  This awesome book has great pictures and step-by-step instructions on how to do almost anything related to quilting.  Sure enough, there was some very useful information on both hand piecing and machine piecing curved seams.

I marked the center of each piece:

I then pinned. And pinned some more. The book said pin “liberally,” so I did.

Then I slowly, very slowing stitched the seam.  I clipped the curves in the concave side and then pressed.  I was pretty pleased with my first efforts and only had to fix a few tiny puckers.  So here is my Indiana Puzzle:

The fabric is Neesha by Sentimental Studios for Moda.

Be sure to check out the Civil War Blog for block instructions and historical insight into the Civil War.  And, of course, you will also want to visit the Civil War Quilts 2011 Flickr site to view some fabulous and inspirational blocks created by other CWBOW groupies.
