Apple Tree Block – Civil War BOW

This is week 46 of Barbara Brackman’s Civil War Block of the Week project commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.  Barbara’s blog presents us each week with a new quilt block and a bit of history.  The block this week is called Apple Tree which reminds us of a Union marching song about the Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

My Apple Tree block looks more like a cherry tree with cherries in the fabric:

The fabric I am using is Neesha by Sentimental Studios for Moda.  Not technically a Civil War reproduction fabric I’ve been really pleased with all the Civil War blocks I’ve made for this project using this fabric. The set of fat quarters I bought many years ago on a whim have really paid off!

Be sure to check out the Civil War BOW Flickr site to see other Apple Trees.

Have a great week, y’all!

  1. Your block looks so nice, especially the way you photographed it. Looks like cedar bark behind it. Was it a cedar tree? So glad this week’s block was so easy and turned out exactly to the correct size.

  2. I love your whole web page and everything in it ! Especially your maple leaf and hand quilting, and especially your civil war quilt. The blue really adds ! Your apple cake looks yummy…but I know a trick that will make any apple cake even more yummy! In another bowl, mix the chopped apples with the sugar. Let it draw out the apple juices for an hour. The best apple cake tip I have found ! Keep quilting and baking!
