Civil War Quilt Top Complete!

I’ve been slowly but surely working on finishing the Civil War quilt top. This is a project begun in January 2011 when Barbara Brackman started her Civil War Quilts Block of the Week blog commemorating the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.  What a wonderful blog and I want to thank Barbara for each week giving us an interesting tidbit of Civil War history as well as a block pattern representing that history.  Many blocks were quite challenging and I learned so much!  I can see my skill progress in looking at the earlier blocks compared to those later in the year.

I’m very proud of this quilt top! So I want it for our king size bed – which meant borders upon borders.

The predominant fabric line in this quilt is Neesha by Sentimental Studios for Moda – which has been discontinued.  I had to do a lot of internet searching and shopping to come up with the border fabrics.  The teal in the small border is not Neesha but I liked the way it pulled the other teals out of the florals in the other fabrics.

Now I just need to figure out a backing fabric and I’m off to the long arm quilter!  I will post pictures when it is quilted and bound, I promise!

Have a great week, y’all!

Egg-cuses, Egg-cuses

It seems like my life has been full of excuses for not quilting recently.  Some of the egg-cuses are egg-cellent – such as the Easter Egg Hunt with two of my grandchildren yesterday:

We certainly had a wonderful time!

I also have a new toy that has distracted me from quilt projects – a new iPad!  Anybody know of any great quilting apps?

But some of my egg-cuses have been pretty lame.  Here are just some of my projects put on hold with one egg-cuse or another:

  • Just Takes 2 Mariners Compass block — first I thought I needed a special size needle to do the hand sewing but it was so tiny I couldn’t thread the dang thing!  Now, I need special white silk thread to do the applique.  This is not a compass block, this a “stumbling block“!!!
  • Maggie’s big girl bed quilt – waiting for the gingham for an inside border.
  • Civil War quilt - trying to decide on the rest of the border.  I may want to do piping on one of the borders but the fabric I bought for the piping looks great all by itself.  Decisions, decisions!
  • Baby Quilt – have the fabric but haven’t decided on the pattern.  But I’d better get crackin’, the baby is due in July.
  • Any many more … or is that Minnie Moore ;-)

I have accomplished one thing this week.  My blog last week To Redo or Not to Redo asked for advice on whether I should redo some Just Takes 2 blocks that had some applique I wasn’t happy with.  After reading all the wonderful comments, I decided I could live with the applique on block 1 but the hearts on block 6 would drive me crazy.  So I made that block again:

Not perfect but much better.  Looking at the most recent April 1 batch of blocks – it looks like I’ll be getting a lot more applique practice – no egg-cuses!

Have a great week, y’all!

The End of the Civil War!

Oh so sad, today is the last Saturday of Barbara Brackman’s Civil War Block of the Week.  The end of the Civil War BOW!  I will miss checking the blog every week for the latest block and interesting bits of Civil War history.  And I will miss my fellow Civil War groupies on the Flickr site.  It has been a wonderful year and I hope we all stay in touch.

The block this week is called Union Shield.

It called for a stripe fabric – I have no stripe that would work with the fabrics I’ve been using so I pieced a stripe from 1½ inch strips. With the last block completed, it is time to start thinking about settings, sashings, cornerstones and borders – fun stuff!

Happy New Year, y’all!

Civil War Group Quilt

The Civil War Flickr group that has been following Barbara Brackman’s Civil War Block of the Week is a truly wonderful group.  Last June the group began collaborating on a group quilt as a thank you gift for Barbara.  I was pleased to be one of the contributors.  Here is the finished quilt:

The block I made is in the fourth row from the top, fifth block from the left.  It is called Rail Road Crossing:

There were many contributors from all over the world, but special mention goes to Becky Brown who assembled the quilt, Dustin, our Flickr group admin and organizer, and Deb Jacobs who quilted the quilt.

Barbara Brackman’s blog has not only helped create some beautiful quilts, but also long-lasting relationships, forged through the internet but brought to reality in a group quilt that we hope will be treasured for many years to come.

Civil War Christmas Star

Week 52 of Barbara Brackman’s Civil War Block of the Week project brought a challenge!  The Christmas Star block has 41 pieces, but it is a beautiful block and so appropriate for Christmas Eve!

I was glad I had enough red and green in my dwindling pile of fabric I am using in this project.  With only one more week to go, I should make it though.  I am looking forward to seeing what all the other Civil War Quilt enthusiasts will show us on the Flickr site – be sure to check it out!

Merry Christmas to you all, may your holidays be filled with joy and peace!
